The Wizarding World Returns: Everything We Know About the New “Harry Potter” Series

The magic is returning to the screen, but this time, it’s headed to HBO. A decade-long television series, serving as a “faithful adaptation” of J.K. Rowling’s iconic books, is officially in production with a target premiere date of 2027. Fans can expect a new season for each of the seven beloved books.

A New Cast Takes the Stage
The search for the next generation of witches and wizards has concluded, with the main trio and a host of other characters now cast. After an extensive search of over 30,000 actors, the lead roles have been filled by newcomers. Dominic McLaughlin will portray Harry Potter, with Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley and Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger.

While the new series will introduce a fresh ensemble, it will also feature at least one familiar face. Warwick Davis, who played Professor Filius Flitwick in the films, is set to reprise his role as the Charms professor.

Other notable cast members include:
* John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore
* Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape
* Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall
* Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid
* Katherine Parkinson as Molly Weasley
* Johnny Flynn as Lucius Malfoy
* Bel Powley as Petunia Dursley
* Daniel Rigby as Vernon Dursley
The role of the main antagonist, Lord Voldemort, is still shrouded in mystery, with the casting announcement reportedly being kept a secret until the release.

Production Details and Release

Principal photography for the series began in July 2025 in the UK at Leavesden Studios, the same location used for the original films. While no official trailer has been released, HBO has shared a “first look” photo of Dominic McLaughlin in costume as Harry Potter. The series is being helmed by showrunner Francesca Gardiner and director Mark Mylod, who both have strong television credentials.
With production underway and a planned premiere in 2027, the new Harry Potter series is shaping up to be one of the most highly anticipated television events of the decade.
