“Hundred”: The Sci-Fi Action Anime You Might Have Missed
In the vast universe of action-packed anime, Hundred is one of those hidden gems that delivers everything fans of the genre crave—intense battles, futuristic technology, a mysterious past, and just the right touch of romance and school life drama. First airing in 2016, Hundred may have flown under the radar for some viewers, but it remains a fun and thrilling series well worth checking out.
Adapted from the light novel series written by Jun Misaki and illustrated by Nekosuke Ōkuma, Hundred was brought to life by Production IMS and directed by Tomoki Kobayashi. The anime aired from April to June 2016, spanning 12 episodes that blended action, science fiction, and harem elements in a military academy setting.
The story takes place in a world under constant threat from alien life forms known as “Savage.” These mysterious creatures can only be fought using specialized weapons called “Hundreds,” which adapt to the user’s combat style. Enter Hayato Kisaragi, a teenage boy with the highest compatibility rating ever recorded for a Hundred. He enrolls at Little Garden, a battleship-based military academy, with the goal of becoming a Slayer—someone trained to fight the Savage and protect humanity.
Hayato’s journey is filled with unexpected revelations, especially after meeting his roommate Emile Crossford, who harbors a mysterious connection to Hayato’s past. Alongside them is Claire Harvey, the academy’s strongest student and a formidable fighter in her own right. The trio faces intense training, growing relationships, and escalating alien attacks, all while uncovering deeper conspiracies behind the Savage threat.

Other notable characters include Karen Kisaragi, Hayato’s ailing younger sister who serves as his emotional anchor, and Sakura Kirishima, a famous pop idol whose presence adds another layer of intrigue to the plot.
Hundred is more than just flashy battles. It combines classic mecha action with heartfelt moments and relationship development, all wrapped in a sleek sci-fi narrative. The series is backed by a strong soundtrack, including the energetic opening theme “BLOODRED” by D-Selections and the emotional closing song “Eyes on Me” performed by Rumi Ōkubo and Mayu Yoshioka.
While the anime only lasted one season, the story continues in its original light novel form, which spans 16 volumes and dives even deeper into its expansive world and character arcs. A short manga adaptation was also released, giving fans multiple ways to enjoy the Hundred universe.
If you’re looking for a short yet satisfying anime that offers action, character drama, and a unique take on the school/military genre, Hundred is definitely worth a watch. It might not reinvent the wheel, but it rolls with style and heart.
