The Eternal Wait: Why Fans Are Still Holding Out Hope for “Dracula Untold 2” After 12 Years

It has been over a decade since Luke Evans first donned the crimson cape in Dracula Untold, yet the conversation surrounding a potential sequel refuses to stay buried. Released in October 2014, the film was originally intended to be the opening salvo for Universal Pictures’ “Dark Universe,” a shared cinematic world of classic monsters. While that shared universe famously crumbled following the 2017 reboot of The Mummy, the cult following for Evans’ tragic take on Vlad the Impaler has only grown stronger with time, fueled by a modern era of streaming discovery.

The lingering passion for a sequel stems largely from the film’s cliffhanger ending. After sacrificing his humanity to save his people in the 15th century, the finale jumped to modern-day London, where a reincarnated Vlad encounters a woman resembling his lost wife, Mirena. The appearance of the mysterious Master Vampire (Charles Dance) uttering the chilling line, “Let the games begin,” promised a contemporary supernatural thriller that fans are still desperate to see realized. Even in 2026, social media remains flooded with fan-made “concept trailers” that garner millions of views, proving there is still a massive appetite for Evans to return to the role.

Despite the fan fervor, the professional landscape for a direct sequel remains complicated. Universal has pivoted away from the “Dark Universe” model in favor of standalone, director-driven horror hits like The Invisible Man (2020) and the recently released The Wolfman (2025). Furthermore, director Luc Besson recently released his own separate project, Dracula: A Love Story, in early 2026, which further crowds the marketplace for vampire cinema. While Luke Evans has consistently expressed his willingness to return to the character, noting in past interviews that he “loved playing that guy,” no official movement has been made by the studio to greenlight a follow-up.

As the 12th anniversary of the original film passes, Dracula Untold occupies a unique space in pop culture—a “what if” that fans refuse to let go. While the industry has moved toward grounded horror, the high-fantasy, superhero-esque aesthetic of Vlad’s origin story continues to find new life on platforms like Netflix, where it frequently trends. Whether Universal will eventually cave to the decade-long demand or leave Vlad’s modern-day journey in the shadows remains the ultimate mystery, but for the “Untold” faithful, the hope for a sequel is truly immortal.
