Pretty Smart: A Netflix Sitcom That Ended Too Soon
Emily Osment, best known for her roles in Hannah Montana, Young & Hungry, and later Young Sheldon, made a return to comedy with her Netflix sitcom Pretty Smart in 2021. The series promised lighthearted fun, witty banter, and the charm of a classic multi-camera sitcom formula updated for a streaming audience. Despite Osment’s strong comedic presence, however, the show was canceled after just one season.
The Premise
Pretty Smart followed Chelsea (Emily Osment), a Harvard-educated aspiring novelist who moves in with her bubbly influencer sister, Claire (Olivia Macklin), and Claire’s group of quirky roommates in Los Angeles. What begins as a temporary stay evolves into Chelsea trying to navigate the wildly different lifestyles of her sister and her friends, all while attempting to find herself.
The show leaned heavily into themes of family bonds, self-discovery, and the humor of clashing personalities, blending traditional sitcom setups with modern-day millennial culture.
The Cast
Alongside Emily Osment, the show featured:
Olivia Macklin as Claire
Gregg Sulkin as Grant, Claire’s ex-boyfriend and roommate
Cinthya Carmona as Solana, a spiritual healer
Michael Hsu Rosen as Jayden, an aspiring actor
The ensemble created a lively mix of personalities that gave the show a familiar “found family” sitcom feel.

Why It Struggled
Despite Osment’s proven comedy chops, Pretty Smart faced several challenges:
Mixed reviews – Critics noted the show’s reliance on sitcom clichés and one-dimensional characters, even though the cast had strong chemistry.
Crowded streaming market – By 2021, Netflix was flooded with comedy series, and Pretty Smart struggled to stand out among bigger names.
Short attention span for sitcoms – Unlike long-running network comedies, streaming sitcoms often get little time to grow. Pretty Smart only had 10 episodes before Netflix pulled the plug.
Cancelation and Aftermath
Netflix announced the cancelation of Pretty Smart in 2022, leaving fans disappointed but not entirely surprised. Emily Osment, however, quickly found new success—joining the cast of Young Sheldon as Mandy McAllister, a role that won her praise and expanded her TV presence.
A Missed Opportunity
Though short-lived, Pretty Smart highlighted Osment’s natural comedic timing and ability to lead a sitcom. For fans of her earlier work, it was a welcome return to the kind of lighthearted comedy she does best. Unfortunately, in the fast-paced world of streaming, even promising shows can disappear quickly.
While it may not have left a lasting mark, Pretty Smart remains a reminder of how talented Emily Osment is—and how she continues to reinvent herself in television.
